2.7 World War II

The rule left to two, they will not hold it a very short time.
Three years and seven months having passed they will go to war.
The two vestals will rebel against them;
the victor then born on American soil. (IV-95)

This quatrain has multiple meanings but they all refer to the same series of events dealing with World War II. «The rule left to two» refers to the two main dictators who were trying to conquer the world, the leader of the German Empire and the leader of the Japanese Empire.

Hitler was trying to take over Russia and Europe, and eventually he was going to try and take over the United States. The Japanese were taking over Mongolia, Siberia, China, India, Australia and that part of the world. They planned to help take over the Americas from the the other coast, so that the people of the Western Hemisphere would have a two-front battle to fight. Meanwhile «the victor born on American soil», the element that was to determine which side of this conflict would win; and that was none other than the atomic bomb.

There were two main scientists whose brains figured out the theoretical information needed to develop the bomb. In this quatrain I dated this conflict. The time element involved was from the time that the Americans became involved in World War II: «three years and seven months later» would be when the Americans, bearing «the victor», would end the war by dropping the bomb, changing the concept of violence forever.

The «two vestals that will rebel against them» are the two scientists who not only rebelled against the dictators that were trying to take over the world, but they also rebelled against conventional ideas at the time. They were able to break through conventional thinking and bring forth the various theories and mechanizations of nuclear power.

Note: According to Roman mythology, Vesta was the goddess of the hearth and the hearth fire.  In ancient Rome there were six vestal virgins who tended the sacred fire in her temple. The scientists could be compared to vestals since they were tending a sacred fire when they invented the bomb.

He who was buried will come out of the tomb,
he will make the strong one out of the bridge to be bound with chains.
Poisoned with the roe of a barbel,
the great one from Lorraine by the Marquis du Pont. (VII-24)

«He who was buried» and «comes forth from the tomb» represents Germany during World War II, regaining her status as a world power, even if it is temporary. And «being poisoned with the roe of a barbel» represents its disastrous attempt to take over Russia. I used that symbolism because in both my time and yours, one of the main things that Russia is famous for is caviar. Hitler broke all peace treaties and although the different countries around him were «strong», «he bound them up with chains» because he was acting so audaciously they did not know how to react.
